The Artists

the artists from mija fiber artMija is a family business based in the mountains of western North Carolina and is founded on a philosophy of using the Earth's resources conscientiously. Several years ago through a fortunate series of events beyond their control, Libby and Jim found their way out of the fast paced world of graduate degrees and professional practice. They left their careers in science, engineering and health care, and followed their creative spirit. Looking for a way to blend art with their environmental convictions, led them to a process where they recycle vintage cotton shirts to create intricate and involved fabric art.

Libby and Jim collaborate on all artistic and constructive aspects of the process, from conception, through design, to the final composition. The fact that they have no formal education in the arts frees them to explore original ideas throughout the process. Libby's gift for color blending and Jim's eye for design result in one-of-a-kind pieces that are alive with depth, motion, and the illusion of radiant light.
